  • What are the software requirements for ChronoLator?
    • ChronoLator runs on all versions of Microsoft Word™ from 2000 to 2007 inclusive. Version 2.1, to be released in August 2010, will support the 32-bit version of Word 2010. 64-bit support will be introduced in a later version.
  • Does ChronoLator run on Word for Mac?
    • ChronoLator is designed for and tested on Windows versions of Word. It will certanly not work with Word 2008 for Mac, as the Visual Basic for Applications programming environment is not included. Although it might run OK on other versions of Word for Mac, it is not tested on them and support is not guaranteed.

General Usage

  • Viewing tutorials stored on your computer - getting the clearest display.
    • If you have downloaded the full ChronoLator package to your computer, the easiest way to view the tutorials is from the Help menus in the Online Workbench or any ChronoLator document.

If you want to view them directly from the Tutorials folder in Windows Explorer or My Computer, you should open the .htm files rather then the .swf files to get the clearest display.

  • What are the differences between the various versions of ChronoLator?

Known Problems

These are the issues we have discovered since Version 2.0 was published on August 20 2007, together with some ongoing issues. Please refer to the Release History page for details of problems fixed in earlier releases. If your problem is neither fixed in the latest release nor mentioned below, please fill out our bug form.

  • I cannot see any illustrations or pictures in the Online Workbench or other documents.
    • This problem is not peculiar to ChronoLator.  Make sure that your Word options are set to allow pictures to be viewed: use Tools > Options > View and untick the 'Picture Placeholders' box.
  • The Sort Tables button sometimes does not work.
    • This is usually a problem with Word maintenance levels, but might also occur if you have a variety of date/time formats in your document. In either case, format the dates to the ISO date format before sorting. The dates can be redone as "dd mmm yyyy" after the sort if you want.
  • I get a Microsoft Visual Basic error "... Could not set the Curline Property ..." when opening a ChronoLator document.
    • Microsoft has accepted this as a bug with certain service levels of Word 2007, particularly (though not limited entirely to) SP2.
If the document you are opening is licensed, this only occurs when you press the "View Licence" button; so don't press it!
If you are trying to evaluate ChronoLator, please try to find another computer on which to do so.
ChronoLator Version 3.0 will include a circumvention for both licensees and evaluators.
  • I get a Microsoft Visual Basic error "Runtime Error '4120' Bad parameter" when opening a ChronoLator document.
    • Microsoft has accepted this as a problem with certain installations of Word 2007.
Please ensure that your user name and the initials are set up in the Word Options dialog box.
To do this, click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, enter a user name and initials under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, and then click OK.
  • I get a Microsoft Visual Basic error "Runtime Error '4605' This property or method is not available . . ." when opening a ChronoLator document.
    • This problem can occur when you open a ChronoLator document attached to an email and Word is set to open email attachments in Reading View. To avoid it, either save the attachment to disk and open the saved copy, or prevent Word from opening email attachments in Reading View by following the appropriate instructions for your version of Word:
Word 2003 click Tools, click Options, click on the General tab, clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box, and then click OK.
Word 2007 click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, clear the Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading View, and then click OK.
  • Problems with Word 2007 file formats.
    • Certain maintenance levels of Word 2007 corrupt the document variables ChronoLator creates and uses when using the new file formats (docm and docx). Please see here for more information.
